Collaborative Mural

Introduction to color mixing (paint)

Collaborative Mural is all about how to mix paint.  Students are limited to using only primary colors, black, and white.

By the end of this project the students are masters of paint mixing.
Students create a 5in. by 7in. magazine collage (I choose colorful collages from Monochromatic Painting that comes before this project).  Teacher photographs collage and digitally enlarges it to 7 in. by 10 in.  The enlarged image is printed in color and cut into 1/2 in. squares.  These are attached to larger cards (to better keep track of them) and given a code number (see examples in presentation below).  Students paint the visual information from the small card onto 4 in. squares of mat-board.  Students have no idea what the image is until the end of the project when all the painted cards are assembled on a piece of plywood.  56 in. by 80 in. are the full size plywood dimensions.  I have students who finish early hot glue the cards on during class so the class can see the image begin to take shape.
