Students draw a different object from direct observation each day for a week. The objects become more complex as the week progresses. Values begin with black and white and transition to color. Materials used are graphite and oil pastels.

Day 1 Paper bags
Students draw and render a paper bag using a full range of values
Day 2 Bike Parts
Students render selected bike parts using graphite and a single light source. The objective is for them to identify and locate complex cast shadows and highlights on reflective metal.
Day 3 Glass Half Full
Students fill a clear plastic half full of water and render it from direct observation using graphite.
Day 4 Shaving Cream Sandwiches
Students render values in color by drawing from observation.
Day 5 Ice Cream Cones
Students render values on ice cream cones using oil pastels
